This is where PlantScout, an innovative quality management tool, comes in. PlantScout was founded in 2013 by Julian de Wit, a software engineer, after he got a question from a Phalaenopsis grower.

At first, it was only used by a few. Then, Leo Swart, a creative consultant in the horticulture industry, came in to support the sales and marketing, since the native app and web portal could help the industry. The platform has, in just a few years, become the industry’s go-to tool for bridging the gap between the numerous sectors of the industry, including breeders, growers, and suppliers.

It is an innovative platform that removes the disconnect between office management and field operations in greenhouses, nurseries, and other industry segments.

This groundbreaking data analysis and quality management application has essentially redefined how plant and flower professionals collect, analyze, and share crucial information. With PlantScout, according to Leo, who is essentially the co-founder, it is much easier to make reports without the need to walk the whole length of greenhouses or climb carts and crates in search of data.

Built on the philosophy of capturing and preserving breeder, grower, exporter, and service provider information, PlantScout offers a streamlined approach to quality management that eliminates reliance on cumbersome paper-based systems. It is a vital tool for numerous horticultural businesses, which shows the immense influence of targeted digital solutions in the traditional horticultural sector in various ways.
With over twenty-five years of horticultural experience, Leo has consistently dedicated himself to addressing the fundamental challenges facing the sector. As a consultant with Cresultant—a company keen on delivering horticulture solutions—since January 2016, he acknowledged that collaboration throughout the value chain was both essential and challenging for the industry's success. His extensive experience across all aspects of the industry, coupled with a global network, helped identify a critical gap: working as a consultant, he realized that growers often struggled with disconnected data systems, delayed communication, and the inability to track crop performance across supply chains.

Basically, every segment of the value chain seemed to have a disconnect when it comes to data and information sharing. So,  when he was introduced to the idea of PlantScout, he saw the opportunity to connect the industry with this modern technology, in a platform that allows users to collect data in the field, greenhouse, or warehouse and instantly sync it to a centralized platform for analysis and collaboration.
His approach stemmed from his conviction that, because the horticultural sector faces significant challenges that require innovative solutions, their approach needs to focus on examining the industry from different perspectives, building connections within plant and flower businesses and across the supply chain, and prioritizing customer needs. In PlantScout, they therefore created a solid solution that exemplifies their belief in the importance of making collaborative connections throughout the entire value chain, applying smart technologies and data.

Its Continuous Development and Evolution
Between 2013 and 2017, the application was in its advanced developmental phase, mainly focusing on breeding and grower reports and photo documentation. In the course of that duration, Leo also had the opportunity to further explore it, taking note of how it would fit in his idea of addressing challenges that affect the horticulture industry, even as more development saw it expanding its features to include grower-specific modules like pest tracking and vase life testing.

 



 

Then in 2019, he got onboard, and after the Covid-19 pandemic’s effects had subsided, PlantScout, then a collaboration of the strengths of Julian and Leo’s vision, continued its fine-tuning, and partnerships with some industry leaders shaping its specialized modules. For example, grower Marginpar used PlantScout to monitor their summer flower varieties across their African nurseries, for different parameters, including vase life, then aggregating the data for precision breeding. Offline capabilities were also introduced, enabling its use in remote greenhouses or fields with limited connectivity

As noted, Julian's idea of PlantScout was further built upon by Leo's work at Cresultant, where he had been developing strategies to help the horticultural sector adapt to changing market dynamics. Its design was from the ground up to address the specific needs of horticulture professionals, with a focus on usability and practical application, especially in greenhouse environments—from greenhouses to the field, from the coolhouse to breeding environments.

Over the subsequent years, PlantScout continued to advance, developing specialized modules for different segments of the horticulture industry. For example, they created a dedicated test module for Phalaenopsis breeder, Labeau, and a crop protection registration system for Dekker Chrysanten in a tailored approach that has been instrumental in their success, allowing the platform to address the unique requirements of diverse horticultural operations. More developments continued thereafter. Now, the platform even syncs with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, ensuring seamless data flow between field operations and enterprise software. Furthermore, recent updates have included formula integrations, batch management tools, and multilingual support.

Generally, one would therefore say, the PlantScout platform features specialized modules that address specific industry needs, including flower trials and vase life and shelf life testing, Quality Control and Checks (both in and out), complaint handling workflows, professional inspection reports, integration with ERP systems, dosing monitoring for crop treatments, pedigree tracking for breeding programs, scouting for pests and diseases, and location tracking for batch management. One can also use the app internally or share it with their customers or suppliers.

Fresco QC met PlantScout

At Fresco Flowers in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands, there's a constant flow of roses in and out. With an average of one million roses processed each day—and that's not even their full capacity—maintaining oversight is no small task. "We handle around 450 million stems per year," says Jos Ravensbergen, who co-leads the quality team at Fresco together with Koos Caspers. "It's a continuous process, with flowers being in different places at the same time. For us, the big challenge was: how do you get all that information in one central place?"

Structure and clarity
The answer came a few years ago in the form of an app: PlantScout. "Before that, we did everything with little Excel sheets," Koos explains. "Each team had its own overview, but there was no joint overview. Now we use PlantScout, and there is much more structure and clarity."

The app assists with the arrival of the flowers: the boxes are assessed, any deviations are noted, and it is immediately checked if it can be done more efficiently, for example, by fitting more bunches in one box. "During the process, we assess the flowers and give a rating with stars or comments," Koos explains. "If something stands out, we report it in the app. This way, our Kenyan growers know what to pay attention to."



Where photos, calls, or messages once were the norm, a weekly report now goes directly to the grower. "The report is straightforward, and everyone is on the same page," says Jos. "This reduces confusion and minimizes miscommunication. After all, no one benefits from rejection. The goal is to work and improve together."

Improved collaboration
According to him, that collaboration has visibly improved since the introduction of PlantScout. "For our growers, the report has become a fixed part of meetings. They take it seriously. They know: this is what Fresco sees, this is what we can work on."

The report is sent on behalf of the Fresco quality team, without personal names. "It's not about who said something, but about what has been observed," says Jos. "That prevents discussion. You look at the data together, at the flowers, and you move forward."

"This is a relief"
The system has been running for almost six years now and is fully part of daily work. Each team has a member who works with the app, which also functions in the cold storage. Adjustments can even be made while drafting a report.

Koos was a bit skeptical at first. "You think: another app, something new again. But once it was up and running, I thought: this is really a relief. Instead of loose emails or messages, everything is now neatly organized."

Data without insight is ballast
"Data without insight is just ballast," says PlantScout co-founder Leo Swart. "It's not just about collecting information—it's about understanding what you're looking at and being able to act on it." For Swart, that's the core principle behind PlantScout's approach. Users retain full control over how and with whom they share their data. While Fresco primarily uses the reports to communicate with suppliers, the technology is versatile and can easily be adapted for other purposes.

And that, Jos believes, is exactly where the strength lies: "It's simple, clear, and it brings people together. The grower in Kenya is fully committed—and that commitment drives improvement. We benefit, the grower benefits, and so does the entire trade. It really is that simple."

The PlantScout app, from the company of the same name, is a simple but effective tool for registering anything a grower wants to register about plants or flowers. From cuttings during cultivation to sales, everything fits into various modules. The valuation is done with figures, possibly supplemented with your own photos.

Sander Middelburg of the company Leen Middelburg Chrysanten (LMC) in Maasdijk is one of the first users of the new module (IPM Crop Scouting). He is thus at the basis of the further development of this registration system. Middelburg: "We have a great collaboration with the app builder. We can switch quickly and work towards a solution."

Various modules to ensure
quality Everyone can put the app on their own phone. That's an advantage, everyone has a phone, so anyone can use this registration app. The app consists of a number of standard modules, including the registration of diseases and pests in the crop. But there are many more.
Middelburg: "Within our growers' association Zentoo, we use various modules such as cutting control upon receipt, vase life testing, quality control and the assessment of test trays. Because we as Zentoo want to guarantee a certain quality, the registration of the end product is very important."

Being able to switch quickly with the creators
The creator of the app is a small independent company, not linked to climate computers or auction systems. Middelburg thinks that is an advantage: "It is indeed an independent party and has no interest of its own in the process of registration. The advantage is precisely the scale. We can communicate with the makers themselves and adapt the modules to our needs. The two owners Leo Swart and Julian de Wit are close to the practice. They can reason from the grower's point of view and what they need to keep up with their knowledge and experience in an easy way."

Value app in the chain can grow
Middelburg: "There is now too little communication in the floriculture chain. With this app, the propagators would be able to communicate about batches of cuttings with the growers and vice versa. But also suppliers with buyers and vice versa, We are now doing tests with vase life of varieties and batches. That information can be important for the buyers. The entire chain can benefit from PlantScout, but trust must be built up between the links in that chain."

Sixteen farms spread across four African countries, each facing unique climates and conditions, yet all required to deliver similar quality standards for flowers travelling long distances to their market destinations. Quite a hurdle that grower Marginpar has often contended with. But they discovered PlantScout, a smart digital tool designed for the horticulture industry, and quite a lot has changed for them.

For them, a search for better data logging led them to this technology that has become a key part of their operations. This confirms the idea that with the right tool, there can be a great difference in a field as unpredictable as floriculture. In the subsequent years, the grower, known for delivering premium summer flowers, has used PlantScout to streamline its quality management, making previously fragmented processes seamless.
