Recognizing innovation and feasibility
"We faced some tough questions from the jury regarding the feasibility and market potential of Hippotainer, but being well-prepared made all the difference," shares Tijmen Blok, founder and CTO of Hippotainer. "This recognition is a strong validation of the innovative capabilities and potential impact of our solutions in container farming."

Winning the Wageningen Entrepreneurship grant doesn't just come with prestige; it also opens doors to valuable networks. "The grant gives us and other participants an introduction to important connections we can use immediately to take Hippotainer further," he explains. One notable opportunity linked to the event is the Unstuck Award, hosted by Willem Sodderland, which helps young entrepreneurs overcome obstacles by connecting them with audience members who can provide support through their networks.

Navigating challenges and market realities
Like any pioneering venture, Hippotainer has encountered challenges. "One major hurdle has been identifying where we can add the most value," he admits. "We don't see Hippotainer as a silver bullet to solve hunger, but rather as an essential tool in addressing the complex problem of food insecurity."

Despite this, the market response has been encouraging. "Currently, we're seeing a positive reception with growing interest and adoption of our solutions. Our container farms can be placed wherever they are needed - urban rooftops, remote islands, or even disaster zones. The versatility means you're not bound by fertile soil or climate conditions."
Exploring Hippotainer's three innovative solutions
Hippotainer offers a range of tailored container farming solutions designed to meet diverse needs and crops. "Our goal is to provide flexible, scalable systems that anyone, from entrepreneurs to researchers, can use effectively."

"The Deep Water Culture system is at the heart of our hydroponic innovation," he explains. "It's a simple yet powerful technique where plant roots are suspended in a nutrient-rich, oxygenated water solution, enabling faster growth and higher yields compared to soil farming."

With nearly 97 square meters of cultivation space inside a single 40ft container, the DWC system uses vertically stacked trays and strategically placed units to maximize production. This design allows growers to produce a wide variety of leafy greens, microgreens, herbs, and even saffron.

The DWC system also integrates LED lighting, fertigation, and environmental controls, which can be monitored remotely. "These features ensure optimal growth conditions and allow growers to manage their farms anywhere, anytime," he adds.

"For those looking to grow a broader range of crops, including fruits and vegetables that benefit from a growing medium, the Harvest Wall is our most flexible solution," Tijmen explains. The HW system consists of modular tiles, each with 4 or 6 plant sites, which can be customized based on the grower's needs.

This setup is ideal for crops like strawberries, chilies, dwarf tomatoes, bell peppers, kale, and edible flowers. "The Harvest Wall bridges traditional agriculture and modern farming techniques. By using a medium for roots to grow in combination with vertical farming, growers gain versatility and the ability to produce specialty crops in a controlled environment."

"Our Controlled Environment Container comes without any pre-installed internal farming system. Instead, it focuses solely on maintaining perfect climate conditions - temperature, humidity, and air circulation, giving growers and researchers a blank canvas to build their own setups."

This approach is particularly attractive for research institutions or businesses with specialized needs. "Whether it's growing flowers, mushrooms, fruits and vegetables, or even storing delicate goods, the CEC provides a stable, controlled space that can be customized over time," Tijmen says.

Looking forward: Caribbean pilots and more
Building on this momentum, Hippotainer is gearing up to expand its reach. "Our immediate focus is on piloting projects in Caribbean islands over the coming months," he reveals. These pilots aim to demonstrate how container farming can bring fresh, locally grown produce to remote and challenging environments, reducing dependence on imports and enhancing food security.

"We see Hippotainer as a great means to empower local communities and entrepreneurs with a tool that contributes to food security," he emphasizes. "Because we build inside standardized shipping containers, logistics are straightforward. A fully operational farm can be shipped anywhere, deployed immediately, and even relocated once local food security stabilizes," Tijmen explains. "This flexibility sets us apart and opens doors for sustainable agriculture in regions often overlooked."

Hippotainer is also invaluable in humanitarian contexts. "In disaster zones or refugee camps, fresh food access can be a lifeline," he shares. "Our rapidly deployable container farms offer aid organizations a scalable, mobile platform to restore nutrition and hope through local food production."

“We believe that smart innovations can empower growers and communities worldwide to enhance local food production, even more in areas where it seemed impossible before. Fresh food should be attainable for everyone,” said CEO Hippotainer Jort Maarseveen.

De Hippotainer die de Wageningse start-up op de markt brengt is een verticale boerderij in een vrachtcontainer van 40 voet. Daardoor past hij op een vrachtwagen en kan hij overal ter wereld heen vervoerd en neergezet worden. Maarseveen en Blok wonnen al diverse prijzen met hun uitvinding. In juni dit jaar won de Hippotainer de Groenpact Impactprijs 2024 en begin november de 4TU. Impact Challenge bij de TU Delft. Langzamerhand raakt nu ook de markt geïnteresseerd. “We zien ontzettend veel aanvragen binnenkomen, meerdere per week”, zeggen de twee.

Verticale landbouw
Beiden zijn pas 26. Maarseveen studeerde Biobased Sciences aan de Wageningen Universiteit & research (WUR), Blok Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management. Ze vonden elkaar 2,5 jaar geleden toen ze naast hun studie werkten voor een adviesbureau in Wageningen. Hen werd bij een project gevraagd of ze op kleine schaal een verticale boerderij konden uitwerken. Bij verticale landbouw worden gewassen in gebouwen geteeld, onder ideale omstandigheden. Daardoor daalt het gebruik van kunstmest, water, pesticiden en landoppervlak aanzienlijk, al is het energieverbruik hoog. Toch kan verticale landbouw een revolutie teweegbrengen in de productie van verse groenten, met name in steden met weinig ruimte of in gebieden waar het te koud, te warm of te droog is om groenten op akkers te verbouwen. Overal ter wereld worden hiervoor grote, miljoenen kostende complexen neergezet, maar dat is voor veel kleine boeren en ondernemers geen haalbare kaart.

Kleine variant
Het duo kreeg daarom de opdracht leveranciers te zoeken voor een commerciële, kleine variant. Bijvoorbeeld in een kamer of een schuur. “We konden toen niets vinden wat goed paste. Dat was opmerkelijk. Toen vroegen we ons af of we het niet zelf konden ontwikkelen”, vertelt het tweetal. “Met dat idee zijn we begonnen: kunnen we niet een klein systeem neerzetten dat overal ter wereld ingezet kan worden? Of dat nou op een plek is waar geen vruchtbare grond of water is. Of waar het heel heet is of juist heel koud. Dat zijn vaak de plekken waar voedselproductie een uitdaging is. Daar kan de Hippotainer een oplossing bieden.”

Overal inzetbaar
Ze kwamen al vrij snel uit op de vorm van een container. Niet alleen kun je die overal heen transporteren, je kunt hem ook makkelijk overal neerzetten. Je hebt geen bouwvergunningen nodig en hoeft verder niets te bouwen. “Je hebt alleen een vlakke ondergrond nodig en je kunt aan de slag. Ook is het systeem modulair. Wil je een twee keer zo groot systeem, dan zet je twee containers naast elkaar of op elkaar”, legt Maarseveen uit.

Eerste Hippotainer
Een jaar na het idee hadden ze een testproduct, al ging het bij het testen wel eens fout. In hun eerste kiemkas bijvoorbeeld gaf de verlichting zoveel warmte, dat alle planten doodgingen. Maar meestal werden meer groentes geproduceerd dan ze kwijt konden. Die werden dan gratis uitgedeeld aan voedselbanken en studenten. De eerste Hippotainer zag in het voorjaar van 2023 het licht. In de container worden over vijf lagen groenten verbouwd op biologisch afbreekbaar substraat van het Groningse bedrijf Growfoam. Van sla tot tomaten, van aardbeien tot spinazie, van basilicum tot andere bladgroente.

Meteen opeten
De plantjes drijven op water, dat hergebruikt wordt. Door gecontroleerd licht, water en nutriënten toe te dienen is er 90 procent minder water en 80 procent minder kunstmest nodig in vergelijking met traditionele landbouw. Er gaat niets verloren. Ook hoeven geen pesticiden gebruikt te worden. “Als je het binnen steriel houdt en ervoor zorgt dat er geen vervelende beestjes binnenkomen, dan hoef je niet te spuiten”, zegt Maarseveen. Blok: “Je kunt de sla zelfs zonder te wassen bij het oogsten al opeten. Er zit ook geen grond aan. Je kunt meteen je tanden erin zetten. Dat vonden bezoekers in het begin wel vreemd.”

Klimaatverandering
Het nadeel van verticale landbouw is en blijft de hoge energievraag. Het systeem mist nu eenmaal de grootste, gratis energiebron uit de natuur: de zon. Die nabootsen kost stroom. “Daarom zullen we nooit zeggen dat verticale landbouw de normale landbouw gaat vervangen. Maar er zijn wel specifieke situaties waar normale landbouw niet mogelijk is of waar het door klimaatverandering niet méér mogelijk is. Daar kun je hiermee een oplossing bieden”, stellen de twee. Om hun Hippotainer verder te vergroenen zijn ze op zoek naar mogelijkheden voor het toevoegen van zonne- of windenergie of batterijen. Daar hebben ze nog geen oplossing voor gevonden.

Oekraïne
Vrij snel na de lancering werd de Hippotainer ingezet in Oekraïne. Dat land kampt niet met voedseltekorten, maar sinds de Russen binnenvielen is het voor de bevolking moeilijker om aan verse groente te komen. Een universiteit in het land was op zoek naar een systeem om voedsel te produceren en tegelijk binnenlandse vluchtelingen aan het werk te zetten. Zo verhuisde de Hippotainer naar Ivano-Frankivsk, een stad in het westen van Oekraïne. Blok en Maarseveen vlogen achter hun container aan en trainden de vluchtelingen in het gebruik van de Hippotainer. Dat was een hachelijk avontuur. De helft van de nachten ging het luchtalarm af en moesten ze naar de schuilkelder. Nadat de Hippotainer in bedrijf was, verbouwden de vluchtelingen er honderden kroppen sla per week in voor de lokale bevolking. Sinds kort is de universiteit verplaatst naar Kiev. Ze moet nog besluiten waar ze de container gaat plaatsen. “Ze willen er graag mee verder en willen er zelfs meer”, zegt Maarseveen.

Noodhulp
Oekraïne is een land in oorlog. Maar ook in landen waar de landbouw door klimaatverandering onder druk staat kan de container ingezet worden. “Dat kan in ontwikkelde en onderontwikkelde landen. Wij bieden een klimaat-adaptieve kweekoplossing”, zegt Blok. Dat kan in stadstaten als Singapore, waar ruimtegebrek een probleem is, in landen waar het groeiseizoen te kort is, op eilandstaten die voedsel moeten importeren, of in woestijnstaten, waar traditionele landbouw onmogelijk is. Maar zeker ook in landen waar door een ramp, een oorlog of een crisis geen voedselproductie mogelijk is. “Op plekken waar humanitaire hulp nodig is, zoals in Gaza of Soedan, is het heel moeilijk om aan verse groente te komen”, zegt Maarseveen. Hulporganisaties als Rode Kruis of Novib zijn dan ook een belangrijke doelgroep, waar de start-up graag mee samen wil werken.
